Celebrate Chocolate with the IWCguide to wine and chocolate pairing

“Chocolate and wine can find perfect partners, and National Chocolate Week is the perfect opportunity to indulge in two of my favourite things. The right wine match can lift your chocolate moment to new heights of pleasure.” - Charles Metcalfe, Co-Chairman of the IWC

It’s National Chocolate Week, so the perfect time for a spot of indulgence. The International Wine Challenge’s first love might be vino, but chocolate comes a very close second. But who says you need to choose between the two? Use this handy guide to match wine with your chocolate treats!

Milk Chocolate

Fans of creamy Milk Chocolate should pop open a bottle of Asti. After years in the shadows, Asti is making a huge comeback with great examples available. Try the Asti Spumante from M&S which picked up a Silver medal at the IWC 2014. Its light texture will complement the creaminess of milk chocolate.

Dark Chocolate

Got a penchant for something darker? A sweet Madeira makes the perfect partner for dark chocolate. The intense fruity and rich palate of Silver medal winner Justino’s Madeira Boal 10 Years Old counteracts the bitterness of dark chocolate. Delicious.

Chocolate Orange Cheesecake

Chocolate and Orange is already a match made in heaven, but add a Rutherglen Liqueur Muscat into the mix and you have flavor combination that is out of this world. A creamy chocolate orange cheesecake goes wonderfully with Silver medal winning Campbells Rutherglen Muscat NV from Victoria, Australia.

Chocolate Fudge Cake

A rich chocolate fudge cake needs a powerful partner and the Silver medal winning Blandy’s 10 Years Old Bual Madeira is more than up to the job. Its light texture yet intense combination of dried fruits with coffee notes is to die for.

Chocolate mousse

An aged Tawny Port like Marks and Spencer 20 Year Old Tawny Port is delicious served with a creamy, milk chocolate mousse. The delicious nut and caramel flavours of this Silver medal winning aged port will complement a light mousse.

However, an intense yet creamy dark chocolate mousse is crying out for a LBV Port to accompany it. Tesco finest* 2008 LBV Port received a Silver medal this year and its dark chocolate spice and luxurious mouth feel is the ideal choice. Rich, elegant and indulgent.
