London’s first wines go officially on sale...London Cru is central London’s first winery. With state of the art equipment and only the best grapes sourced from European vineyards, London Cru is the first opportunity Londoners have had to get directly involved in the winemaking process.

Winemaker Gavin oversees everything from grape deliveries through to processing, fermenting, ageing and bottling. Grapes come from carefully selected growers sourced by Gavin and Roberson Wine’s senior buyer and Master of Wine student, Mark Andrew.

London’s first Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera have now gone on sale to the general public through London Cru’s website and in Roberson Wine on Kensington High Street.

Available in fine restaurants and bars

London Cru’s wines will also be available in some of London’s best bars and restaurants, including Medlar (one Michelin star), The Harwood Arms (one Michelin star), The Palomar, Kai, Mele et Pere, The Kensington & Fulham Wine Rooms, The Bleeding Heart, The 10 Cases, Sager + Wilde and East London’s newest wine bar Mission.

Great reviews

Last week London Cru’s wines received their first reviews from three highly respected UK wine writers. The team were thrilled with the response to their first vintage and hope this will show that quality wine is being made in the capital.

The Evening Standard: Andrew Neather called the Cabernet ‘delicious’, saying ‘these are extremely respectable wines.’

wineanorak.com: wine writer Jamie Goode said on his website, ‘The 2013 releases are all impressive’, and calls the Chardonnay ‘very stylish’.

jancisrobinson.com: wine writer Richard Hemming said ‘All four are varietally true, delicious, drinkable and fairly priced.’

Customers can order the individual wines for £15 a bottle, or get the London Cru ‘Sampler Case’ which contains one bottle of each for £60. Delivery to anywhere in the UK is free on orders over £100, otherwise costs £7.50.

Jancisrobinson.com (reviews by Richard Hemming)

White Wine 1 – “100% whole-bunch pressed. No enzymes. Gorgeous clarity of apple fruit with a delicious toffee character from subtle oak maturation. Very classic Chardonnay, clearly from a warmish part of Europe, but with good definition and bite on the finish. Lovely mealy quality, with substance and texture on the palate. 16+”

Red Wine 1 – “Perfumed, violet, great clarity, really dry and delicate, with just enough tannin. Juicy and fragrant and really subtly done – delicate, featherweight tannins and clean, fine fruit” 16.5

Red Wine 2 – “Beautifully fragrant on the nose, sour cherry fruit and sharp acidity, giving it a real sparky edge. Really fine tannins – sculpted and balanced, just lending a furriness to the finish. Very savoury, and very light – but not at all dilute. 16”

Red Wine 3 – “Tremendous scent – complete varietal accuracy with a sort of menthol tone that suggests Australia in many ways. Then a chocolatey, savoury, chewy palate. Modern but firmly rooted in classic French Cabernet. Really sensitively handled tannic structure. Absolute clarity of aroma and beautiful depth. Drinkable immediately, but with really great potential to age for five years or more. 17+”

White Wine 1 – Very fine nose is subtly nutty with some delicate toastiness and lovely citrus characters. The palate is fine and expressive with gentle bread, nut, citrus and white peach notes. Very stylish wine. Super-clean style. 90/100

Red Wine 1 – From a spot 5 km from the ocean in the Roussillon: a cool site in a warm region. 12.5% alcohol. Fine, fresh black cherry fruit with lovely purity, and a bit of raspberry freshness. Direct and pure with subtle green notes. Nicely textured. 91/100

Red Wine 2 – Supple, bright, expressive wine with spicy black fruits over damson and plums. Lovely acidity and a bit of bite (this was 12.5% alcohol and pH 3.35 after malo). Vibrant juicy fruit and lovely grippiness. 91/100

Red Wine 3 – Jeff Coutelou supplies this, and he was previously giving these excellent grapes to the coop because he just wanted to make wine from local varieties. Lovely pure, sweet blackcurrant fruit nose with some blackcurrant leaf. So classic and expressive. The palate is beautifully balanced with nice structure and classic Cabernet characters. A lovely wine with real potential. 91/100
