Roast turkey tops the list of things that make Christmas, according to research commissioned by Unilever Food Solutions (UFS).
For the survey, carried out by OnePoll, 1,000 consumers were asked to complete the sentence ‘It’s not Christmas without…’. More than half (58%) chose roast turkey, while Christmas crackers came second. The Queen’s speech, highlighted by only 18 per cent of respondents, was beaten into sixth place by Brussel sprouts (41%), Christmas cracker jokes (33%) and falling asleep to a Christmas film on the TV (26%).
Respondents were also asked what makes the perfect Christmas dinner, describing the ideal combination as:
- 2 slices of meat
- 3 roast potatoes
- 5 or more Brussels sprouts
- 2 pigs in blankets
- 2 tablespoons of stuffing
- 2 parsnips
Gravy and cranberry sauce are the condiments and sauces of choice (76% and 48%).
Starters?
Most people don’t want a starter with their Christmas dinner (33%). For those that do, prawn cocktail tops the list (19%) followed by soup (17%).
Dessert is much more popular, with more than a third (35%) opting for Christmas pudding or chocolate yule log (17%).
