Brits to spend less on Valentine’s Day than Europeans

New research from Groupon shows that Brits are planning to spend the least amount of money this Valentine’s Day compared to our European counterparts. Eight per cent of Brits admit their plans won’t cost them anything, 13 per cent are planning on spending less than £10 and a quarter of Brits (26 per cent) will spend between £10-24.

Savvy Brits are now looking to make their money go further and shop for deals on luxury gifts and experiences including designer perfume, Michelin-Starred restaurants, and spa days. Groupon data shows that luxury gifts have seen a 13 percentage increase in the last two weeks with pamper packages proving the most popular with a 37 percentage increase.

The European countries spending less than 25 Euros on Valentine’s Day are:

  1. Britain (47 per cent of respondents)
  2. Germany (43 per cent)
  3. Netherlands (35 per cent)
  4. Italy (27 per cent)
  5. Spain (26 per cent)
  6. Poland (16 per cent)
  7. France (14 per cent)
  8. Belgium (11 per cent)

Only nine per cent of Brits are planning to spend more than £100 this February 14th, compared to nearly a quarter of the French (23 per cent) and a huge 38 per cent of Belgians.

Food wins Brits over

However, just over half (52 per cent) of Brits say they surprise the special person in their life at least once a month. Food is the way to win Brits over – two thirds (66 per cent) will surprise their partner with dinner out. Groupon sales data shows that some of the most popular deals before Valentine’s Day are Michelin-Starred restaurants and tasting menu deals, but after Valentine’s Day, fish and chips rule as customers spend 25 per cent less on food deals after the 14th.

The research showed 45 per cent will surprise their other half with a short break away and 66 per cent with a meal out, with a further third (34 per cent) on goods such as jewellery or perfume.

In the run up to Valentine’s Day, Groupon has also seen an increase in ticket sales as people opt for more cultured experiences, or sporting events, with sales up 14 per cent for football and rugby games.

Roy Blanga, MD of Groupon UK says, “While most Brits might not be looking to spend a lot this Valentine’s Day, it’s still very important to people to make a gesture. Our Valentine’s shop offers a range of experiences catering for all price ranges whether it’s a designer watch, a 5-star hotel stay or tickets to a comedy show.”
