Mayor of London approves revised plans for Television Centre

The Mayor of London has approved Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan’s revised plans for the redevelopment of the iconic Television Centre in west London. Previously, the plans received a resolution to grant planning permission from the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham planning committee on 10 December 2014.

Includes Soho House Club, hotel, restaurants, leisure uses

The revised plans for a mixed use development at Television Centre – including a new Soho House club, 950 homes, office accommodation, hotel and other leisure uses – were submitted in May 2014.  The revisions agreed include the demolition of the existing Stage 4 and 5 office buildings and their replacement with a more sustainable and efficient new ten storey office building with improved facades, designed by architects AHMM. This new building will incorporate the club together with 47 bedrooms, a roof terrace and swimming pool for Soho House. At ground level there will be a mix of independent restaurants, shops and cafes.

A change in use from residential to commercial has also been approved for a new nine storey office building fronting Hammersmith Park on the site of the old BBC restaurant block, with an overall increase in office accommodation across the site from 350,000 sq ft to 519,000 sq ft.

Retaining original features

The partnership with Soho House will deliver Stanhope’s vision for Television Centre as a new centre of gravity in west London. The development will pay homage to the original use of the building and keep many of the original features of the much loved listed buildings including the famous ‘doughnut’, atomic dot wall and Helios statue.  Construction is due to start in April 2015.

The famous forecourt will be remodelled and enlivened by new shops, leisure and entertainment uses including a cinema, gym, restaurants and cafes, which will benefit the local community. The site will be opened up to the public for the first time with access through to Hammersmith Park.

The BBC will return to Television Centre in 2017 to operate refurbished studios 1-3 through its commercial subsidiary BBC Studios and Post Production and BBC Worldwide will move into a new home at Television Centre early in the New Year, following refurbishment of the ‘Stage 6’ building.

A new centre of gravity in west London

David Camp, Chief Executive of Stanhope Plc, said:

“Over the last year, we have been working very constructively with the GLA and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham to realise our vision for Television Centre as a new centre of gravity in west London.  We will now be getting on with an exciting development of these much loved buildings and the creation of a great place to live, work and visit as part of the wider regeneration of the White City area.”

Sir Edward Lister, Deputy Mayor for Planning said:

“Television Centre holds a special place in many people’s hearts so I am pleased that we have been able to preserve key elements of the building while bringing thousands of jobs and homes to the area. White City has been earmarked by the Mayor for major growth over the coming years and schemes such as this are central to our plans to deliver the housing and infrastructure that the city needs. With BBC Worldwide already moving into their new home at Television Centre and BBC Studios and Post Production returning to three television studios in 2017, we have also been able to ensure that this part of London will remain a crucial hub for the media and creative industries for many years to come.”
