British and London dining scene flies high

London has been named as one of the world’s best dining destinations, according to an annual poll by private jet lifestyle publication Elite Traveler.

The UK boasts a total of eight restaurants in the Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants in the World, with five of these based in London: The Ledbury (12), Dinner By Heston Blumenthal (25), Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (32) and Amaya (92).

This year, London has been crowned the third best culinary destination in the world overall by Elite Traveler readers, behind only New York with nine restaurants and the home of fine dining Paris with eight.

The Fat Duck in Top 5

Outside the capital, Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck (5) in Berkshire – which relocated to Melbourne for six months in February – makes it into the top five restaurants in the world. This makes it the highest UK restaurant on the list, with Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir (61) in Oxford and Restaurant Andrew Fairlie (98) in Auchterarder, Scotland also making an appearance on the ranking.

On The Fat Duck’s top five placing on the global list, Chef Jonny Lake felt “absolutely brilliant”, adding: “This is just incredible news and an amazing achievement for the entire team at The Fat Duck. It’s a great feeling to have been recognized by Elite Traveler’s readers as one of the top five restaurants,  and it means a lot to all of us. We are really grateful.”

Number 1: Chicago’s Alinea

The number one spot on the prestigious countdown is claimed by Chicago’s Alinea, with Grant Achatz and his team coming out on top for a fourth consecutive year. The three-Michelin-starred destination offers an 18 to 22 course tasting menu and has been hailed as a bastion of modern progressive cooking.

This year the awards also saw Daniel Humm, Head Chef of Eleven Madison Park and The NoMad in New York, take the title of Chef of the Year ahead of runners up Grant Achatz and Heston Blumenthal.   Young Chef of the Year was won by Eneko Atxa from Spain’s Azurmendi, followed by Joshua Skenes of Saison and Sean Brock of Husk – both based in the US.
