Union Street Cafe is set to open on 16 September in the heart of London’s most thriving food borough with Davide Degiovanni (pictured below with Gordon Ramsay) at the helm. The newest edition to the SE1 dining scene is located in converted warehousing with a focus on ingredient led dishes.
Although it has now emerged that David Beckham is not involved with this new opening by Gordon Ramsay Holdings – apparently they may collaborate on a future Pie and Mash venture! – advance publicity and anticipation has already resulted in a spate of forward bookings which will ensure that newly appointed Chef Davide Degiovanni and his team will be very busy from the start.
Davide’s dishes will focus on seasonal ingredients sourced from carefully selected speciality produce from the Mediterranean with an emphasis on Italian artisan producers – mainly supplying in the small batches they produce in. This will be complemented with what is daily available from the immediate vicinity of Borough and Maltby Street markets.
Italian born and bred Davide’s enthusiasm and love for produce will be highly visible in the daily changing menu which will include dishes like crisp Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella & peperonata, Stone bass crudo, fennel and capers, Tagliolini, rabbit & taggiasche olives and Veal saltimbocca, marsala & fried zucchini – to name a few.
Gordon Ramsay remarks, “I’m delighted to welcome Davide to the team. He is incredibly talented and it’s been great working with him over the past couple of months and see his ideas come to life. The site we have chosen is an amazing space and combined with our fresh, daily changing menu with the most amazing produce, I’m excited to start welcoming guests through the doors.”
Davide remarks of the process of opening to date, “Developing the menu with Gordon has been amazing. We wanted the style of food to be Italian, using Mediterranean produce; much like I would serve back home, but now here too, as we are working with producers such as the farm my family have been buying ricotta from all my life.”
Lived in, raw, urban look for interior
Union Street Café’s interior retains many original features, from the shutters and windows to columns, giving this exciting new opening a lived in, raw, urban look. With designs from Russell Sage, the space has been created with inspiration from London’s East end as well as the local area, with the use of leather and steel and a nod to the Mediterranean feel of the restaurant with eclectic vintage Italian seating.
Downstairs, the Union Street Bar’s design is a local urban living room. With soft lighting and an eclectic mix of furniture, the bar is warm and welcoming. Celebrating the local community and promoting the culture of the area, local artists have captured their interpretation of London living through specially commissioned pieces.
