Masala Grill has just opened in Chelsea’s Kings Road, London. The newest restaurant from MW Eat, Masala Grill is a stylish yet informal and eclectically designed dining room focusing on the best of authentic Indian home cooking, street food and grilled dishes. MW Eat also own Amaya (one Michelin star), Chutney Mary, Veeraswamy (the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK), and seven Masala Zone informal dining restaurants throughout London.
On the site where Chutney Mary so successfully operated for the past 25 years, Masala Grill embraces its local community with a menu range of delectable and affordable dishes that are very much in touch with their Indian roots, from street snacks and grilled fish and meat to curries, biryanis and thalis.
Traditional and contemporary dishes
The team of specialist regional Indian chefs at Masala Grill closely collaborate with co-‐ directors Camellia and Namita Panjabi on the intricate spicing and presentation of each dish – ensuring that authentic family recipes are followed, and that each individual dish embraces its origins with flavour and flair. They have devised a menu that embraces the best of both traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine.
Typical dishes on the launch menu at Masala Grill include – Mutter Tikki Chaat (spiced green pea and mash cake with yoghurt and chutney); Chicken Sixer (with red chilli and onions); Pani Puri (whole wheat puffs filled with lentils and tamarind chutney, topped with spicy dressing); Sea Bass Fillet with Mangalore spices; Delhi Chicken Tikka (marinated in red chilli, ginger and garlic); Duck Breast grilled with raw mango, ginger, chilli and lime; Kerala Green Chicken Curry; Poppy Seed and Mustard Chicken Korma; Bebinca with Orange Sorbet; and Gulab Jamun with Salted Caramel Ice Cream.
Prices range from £5.50-‐£10.50 for starters, main dishes (including Grills, Curries, Biryani and Thalis) from £11-‐£24, and desserts from £4-‐£7.50. There will also be a Sunday Lunch Buffet, with a variety of regional Indian dishes, at £26 per person (£13 for children under 10) from Sunday, 17 May onwards.
Interior design
The interior design is a rich and multi-‐textured space where authentic Indian craftsmanship meets modern design in an informal yet eclectic setting. It is a fascinating mix of Rajasthani colours, framed patterned textiles, and dozens of intriguing artefacts from all over India.
Lighting is low-‐key and flattering, enhanced by dozens of candles. The much loved ficus in the conservatory continues to provide a focal point. There are also two private dining areas to accommodate up to 28 and 30 guests.
