A York hotel has turned to one of the city’s most exciting young chefs to launch its new eating experience. Ben Allnutt, who has worked in a number of AA Rosette establishments, will lead the Best Western Monkbar kitchen brigade when it unveils a new look restaurant and menu in a few weeks time.
The hotel, which this year celebrates its silver anniversary, is in the final phase of a major £3m upgrade and expansion programme, which has seen the construction of a new extension boasting new function suites and bedrooms.
Yorkshire Bar & Grill concept
An important aspect of the scheme is the transformation of the Monkbar’s food and beverage provision, which will see the existing Cloisters restaurant and bar replaced by a new Yorkshire Bar & Grill concept.
Monkbar Hotel General Manager Graham Usher said: “Ben is recognised as one of York’s most exciting and talented chefs, and I’m delighted he’s joining the Monkbar team. In the next few weeks he will be launching our new eating experience, the Yorkshire Bar and Grill.
“This will be the final piece of our £3m investment jigsaw, and will add an innovative new dimension to the city’s already impressive selection of dining venues.
“Ben could not be joining us at a more exciting time and his skills will help take us to a new level in our food and beverage offerings.”
Ben began his catering career at the Enjoy cafe in York, where, as a teenager he moved from serving on tables to preparing food. In January 2009, Ben took up a position at Hotel du Vin. Over the ensuing 18 months he developed his culinary skills and was runner–up in a national hotel competition.
His last position was that of head chef at the two AA Rosette Churchill Hotel, in York. Arriving as chef de partie, Ben rose up the ranks to become its head chef.
The Monkbar Hotel was purchased in 2007 by Shiva Hotels, which owns venues in London, Derby and Manchester, and recently opened two Hampton by Hilton hotels at Waterloo and Gatwick.
