Coeliac UK, the national Charity for people with coeliac disease, has launched its new and improved website www.coeliac.org.uk with the introduction of increased functionality for people with coeliac disease.

Hospitality establishments as well as food and drink manufacturers should check and assess its value to their businesses. With 1 in 100 people in the UK having coeliac disease, an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to gluten which is found in wheat, barley and rye, it represents a substantial market in its own right.

The website now offers new and revamped services which have been built specifically to incorporate the Charity’s first ever app which is to be launched in the New Year.

The site offers new functions including being mobile optimised, dynamically resizing for different devices, Google Map integration, personalisation, printer friendly pages, young people area, research and much more.

Venue Guide

Members can access the Charity’s online Venue Guide which lists over 4000 venues including those restaurants, cafes, pubs and hotels that have taken part in the Charity’s accreditation scheme with integrated Google maps technology to provide directions.

Food and Drink Directory

The Charity’s Food and Drink Directory has been improved to make it easier to search for over 10,000 gluten-free products and those carrying the Crossed Grain symbol, while an extensive Recipe Database will now resize for easy use on a tablet in the kitchen.  For the first time Members will have in their own Scrapbook area of the website which they can personalise with favourite pages, recipes, products and publications for easy reference.

The new site will continue to provide a wealth of information about coeliac disease and the gluten-free diet as well as specific areas for healthcare professionals and the catering industry.

Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Coeliac UK, said:

“It has taken time, particularly with the Food and Drink Directory element of the app, to find a way to integrate our data and encourage support from the retailers to supply us with barcode information.  As this data changes frequently with new products or when packaging changes, this is a huge piece of work in ensuring we can keep this information up to date and we would like to encourage all retailers to continue to support us in being able to deliver the latest product information for people with coeliac disease.”

Free to download

The app will be free to download and available for all and includes free content on the gluten-free diet, eating out tips and information on coeliac disease. Available exclusively to Members as part of their Membership package, there are the added features of the Food and Drink Directory with barcode scanner and Venue Guide. Membership of Coeliac UK is available to anyone with an interest in coeliac disease and the gluten-free diet, whether diagnosed, seeking diagnosis or wanting to support friend or family.  It costs £20 per year (with concessions available).
