A team including some of Britain’s most celebrated chefs and restaurateurs are to embark on an ambitious trek through the Nepalese Himalayas in March, with the goal of raising over £120,000 for Action Against Hunger.
Dan Doherty, Executive Chef at Duck & Waffle, said: “This trek will undoubtedly be one of the most difficult yet rewarding things I’ve ever done and we’re all determined to not only reach our £120,000 target but go over and above it. The challenge we’re about to face is nothing in comparison to the daily challenge those in Nepal have gone through since the earthquake devastated their lives two years ago, and we’re hopeful the money raised will contribute to helping families rebuild their lives.”
Nieves Barragan-Mohacho, former Executive Chef at Barrafina restaurants, said: “I’m a great believer in the work of Action Against Hunger and feel privileged to help children grow up strong. When we visited the villages that Action Against Hunger supports in Myanmar last year and saw where the money goes, we felt very proud to be doing what we can, but there is so much more to be done. The trek will be hard, long and require a lot of motivation, so all the support we receive goes a long way!”
The Nepal Trek Team includes Dan Doherty, Executive Chef at Duck & Waffle, Damian Clisby, Head chef at Petersham Nurseries, Ross Shonhan, Chef and founder of Bone Daddies, Flesh ‘n Buns, Shackfuyu, Nieves Barragan-Mohacho, former Executive Chef at Barrafina restaurants, Tim Spedding, formerly Chef at P Franco and Clove Club, Shaun Searley, Head Chef at Quality Chop House, James Knappett, Head Chef at Kitchen Table, Bubbledogs, Justin Landsberger, Commercial Director at Deliveroo, Mikey Davies, Strategic Projects Commercial Manager at Deliveroo, Dean Arbel, MD of The Bread Factory, Sarah Fox, Head of Restaurants and Leisure at Hammerson, Richard Bigg, MD of Camino Restaurants, Charley Springall, Head of Marketing at The Ivy Collection, Nick Gibson, owner of The Drapers Arms, Tom Hunt, eco-chef, campaigner, food writer, Poco restaurants, and Rosie Mira, Head of Marketing at Hawksmoor..
Following a tough 6-day trek through mountainous terrain, often reaching altitudes of 2,800m, the trip will culminate in a visit to Action Against Hunger’s programmes, where the team will meet families affected and still traumatised by the earthquakes. Team members will be organising a number of fundraising activities throughout the summer, both personally and through their businesses, in order to raise funds towards the team’s challenge target.
Christine Kahmann, Head of Communications at Action Against Hunger, said: “Action Against Hunger witnessed the immediate aftermath of the devastating earthquakes two years ago, which wiped out villages and destroyed lives. The support we provide is absolutely vital to help children and their families rebuild their lives. We’re incredibly appreciative to all those who have volunteered to take part to help us make a real difference.”
