National Minimum Wage: significant increase in penalties in force this weekISSUE: The Government has announced that the substantially increased financial penalties for breaches of the NMW will come into force on 7 March 2014.

In addition, the Government has now started its tougher ‘naming and shaming’ scheme and has already publicised the names of five employers under this new regime.

IMPACT: The financial penalty percentage will increase from 50% to 100% of the employer’s total underpayments, with the maximum penalty increasing from £5,000 to £20,000 per employer.  Click here to see our update of 16 January for further details.

NB. No date has yet been announced for the Government’s further NMW measure which will in due course apply the maximum penalty to each underpaid worker.
