Stephen St Kitchen opens in BFI HQ in FitzroviaOpening June 2014, Stephen St Kitchen is the new restaurant and bar housed within the BFI (British Film Institute), in the heart of central London just off Tottenham Court Road.

The new bar and restaurant is the latest project from the team behind Great Court Restaurant at the British Museum, Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in Hyde Park and Soho private members’ club The House of St Barnabas. Stephen St Kitchen will be a warm and relaxed space serving an inspired, seasonal menu created by Head Chef Mark Block, previously Head Chef at Grain Store since its opening in 2013, and prior to that Head Chef at Bluebird for seven years.

Stephen St Kitchen boasts two excellent outdoor spaces – a front terrace, and a decked area to the back of the restaurant, ideal for alfresco dining and drinking.

The menu at Stephen St Kitchen offers healthy and balanced options, with a strong focus on produce that cooks beautifully in the wood fired oven. Pizzas and flatbreads are a key feature, sitting alongside light salads and other dishes. Appetizers on offer include ‘Potted crab and shrimps, with pickled cucumber & sourdough bread’, and a ‘Sprouting beans salad, with seeds, crispy chicken skin & a citrus dressing’.

Highlights from the main courses include a ‘Flatbread with lamb, humous, coriander, pomegranate & pine nuts’, and pizzas such as ‘Wood roast peppers, aubergines & courgettes’, both cooked in the kitchen’s unique wood fired oven. ‘Free-range chicken, with a Romesco sauce and English asparagus’, and ‘Sea bass fillet with Piedmontese peppers and salsa verde’, are examples of classic European dishes completing the main menu.

Interiors

The redesigned interiors at Stephen St Kitchen are the work of award winning Softroom Architects, echoing the style of a European brasserie. The space is open and inviting, filled with elegant banquette dining, a visible kitchen, bar and two outdoor terraces.

The open kitchen forms the heart of the restaurant, completed by a sculptural brass plated wood and gas fired oven, and counter seating allowing diners to sit and enjoy the action from the comfort of leather upholstered bar stools.

The warmth of these features act as a contemporary contrast to the traditional brick vernacular and concrete pillars which have been left exposed. Light fittings custom designed by PSLab in corrugated metal and brass also add warmth, and ‘Light Drawings’ by Christopher Bucklow hang on the back wall.

Stephen St Kitchen sits above the private screening rooms at the BFI and can cater for special events in the building.
