Hungry Londoners visit the PestaurantRentokil’s award-winning “Pop-Up Pestaurant” has returned to London’s One New Change, offering visitors a culinary experience bigger, better and buggier than ever before.

Exotic treats

Rentokil celebrated its pest control heritage by serving up an array of exotic treats, including sweet chilli pigeon burgers, salt & vinegar crickets, mexican spice mealworms, plain roasted locusts, scorpion lollipops, chocolate-covered mixed bugs and much more.

Also available were a limited number of Early Bird Breakfast Pies, specially designed for the event by former Great British Bake Off contestant, Ruth Clemens. The pies include a special ingredient – bamboo worms – along with more traditional English breakfast fare (bacon & eggs), and were created by Ruth as part of Rentokil’s ‘Pestaurant Bug Off’ competition.

The food was FREE to visitors, and a number of Rentokil experts were also on-hand to discuss the food being served, answer any pest questions from members of the public and pass on their ‘top tips’ for avoiding pest problems.

Hungry Londoners stop here

Last year’s event attracted more than 3,000 hungry Londoners looking to sample the unorthodox fare on offer – all members of the public are welcome – and Rentokil expects even more visitors to have stopped by this time around. Since its initial success last summer, Pestaurant events have taken place across the globe, including pop-ups in Washington DC, Cape Town, Sydney, Dubai and Paris, but today returned to where it all began in August 2013.

Keeping the heat on Britain’s pests

David Cross, Head of Technical Training Academy at Rentokil, comments: “The Pestaurant is all about celebrating the hard work that goes into keeping the UK’s pests under control. Common UK pests like wasps, mice, rats, bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas and pigeons, can become a problem for anyone, and can affect both commercial and residential properties.  Much like the rest of us, they are focused on looking for food and shelter.  Once they find a good supply of food and an environment where they feel safe, then they will happily set-up home indefinitely. The Pestaurant is here to raise awareness of common pest issues and demonstrates our commitment to keeping up the heat on Britain’s pests.”

Five Foodie Facts about edible insects:

  1. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, over 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diet with insects
  2. 100g of crickets contains just 121 calories, compared to 288 calories in the same amount of beef
  3. Common house crickets contain four times as much protein as the same weight of chicken
  4. Cattle require twelve times more feed to produce the same amount of protein as crickets
  5. The correct term for eating insects is ‘entomophagy’
