Joe’s Southern Kitchen & Baris bringing the authentic American taste of the South to Kentish Town with the opening of its second site. Occupying a prime location on Kentish Town Road, the new Joe’s will offer the North London audience its trademark succulent fried chicken, belly-filling American dishes and heady cocktails.
Having launched in Covent Garden in 2013, Joe’s Southern Kitchen’s food and cocktails, inspired by the American South and served up in a fun & unpretentious atmosphere, has been a huge hit with Londoners.
Restaurant Operations Manager Jim Robertson says: “After the success of Joe’s in Covent Garden, we decided it was time to open up our kitchen to more Londoners and a new venue in Kentish Town was an obvious choice for us. The restaurant scene in NW5 is about to explode and we want to be a part of it.”
Spread over two floors and occupying the former site of Kentish Canteen, the new Joe’s will feature a 90 cover ground floor restaurant and outside 20 cover BBQ and dining space, along with a basement bar called JAILBIRD. With sleek interiors that tap into classic Americana but with a modern urban edge, the new site will mix raw exposed brickwork with parquet-topped tables and scarlet leather banquette seating. Vintage Coca Cola signs and neon American billboards complete the look.
Kitchen and menu
Heading up the kitchen is the newly appointed Executive Chef Trevor Tobin (Steam & Rye, The Big Easy, Goodman), accompanied by Head Chef and creator of the original Joe’s menu, Mark Jeevaratnam. The new menu at Joe’s Kentish Town will feature many of the favourites from the original venue, but the main focus will be the venue’s signature new recipe, Sweet Tea Brined Fried Chicken with Lemon Salt & Tabasco Honey.
Alongside the signature chicken, the menu will include Joe’s famous Beef Short Rib and Southern favourites like Devilled Eggs, Mac ‘n’ Cheese and Gooey Corn Spoon Bread. Breakfast and brunch will also have a big focus and will feature American breakfast favourites that have been given the Joe’s treatment. As always, Joe’s dishes are designed for sharing with friends, getting your fingers dirty and your face sticky.
Downstairs, the aptly named JAILBIRD basement bar makes the most of its history as a police station. Alcoves originally used as cells have been transformed into cosy drinking booths. The cocktail list features innovative concoctions alongside original takes on the Southern classic Julep and Sazerac, and the spirits offering will boast a large selection of Bourbons and Ryes. The beer list includes American favourites and craft labels, the perfect accompaniment to the venue’s tasty bar snacks.
Playing old fashioned blues, classic country, Northern Soul and rockabilly, JAILBIRD is the place to go to hear the best of Southern American music and its influences.
