Mowgli Street Food, offering authentic Indian cuisine in a stylish setting, is set to open its first restaurant in Manchester at the iconic Corn Exchange this summer.
Mowgli is the brainchild of barrister turned restaurateur Nisha Katona who aims to bring a new, fresh, honest articulation of Indian food to the heart of Manchester, following on from the success of its sister site in Liverpool, which opened last October.
As a consummate cook in her own right, with a cookbook being published this autumn and having just filmed for Food Network, Nisha aims to bring simple, healthy, brisk and honest Indian food to the three-level, 200 cover restaurant.
Small plates of explosive, virtuosic flavours
Mowgli’s menu is built around the idea of “chat”, small plates of explosive, virtuosic flavours featuring the tang and zing of tamarind and coriander. Cool, edgy, twisted, street and home-grown dishes with fresh clean flavours at the heart of each one.
Nisha Katona said: “I’m delighted to be opening our second Mowgli venture in Manchester and feel very excited to be occupying space in one of the city’s most historic and recognisable landmarks.
“Manchester is a melting pot of different cultures, ideas, philosophies and flavours, and our aim is to take guests on a journey of amazing, authentic food, and fully immerse them in true Indian culture.”
Work began on the historic Grade II listed building in October, 2014, following plans from the Aviva Investors Property Trust, owners of Corn Exchange Manchester, and developers Queensberry Real Estate to revitalise the building and transform it into one of the UK’s best dining facilities.
Restaurants to complement the building
In addition to Mowgli, two of London’s most popular restaurant brands – Mexican street food eatery, Wahaca, and casual Italian restaurant, Vapiano, have confirmed plans to open their first sites outside of the capital.
These exciting signings will also be joined by quirky and unique firsts for Manchester – casual dining and drinking lounge, The Cosy Club; Brasilian Barbecue Restaurant, Cabana; and Banyan Bar and Kitchen.
To further strengthen the dining offering, the line up will include a newly re-imagined Salvi’s as well as a new concept (yet to be announced) from Individual Restaurant Company. These will transform the historic building into a must-visit destination for food lovers.
Stuart Harris from Queensberry Real Estates, the company overseeing the buildings transformation, said: “Our vision is to create a mix of restaurants both regional and national whose offer complements and embraces this beautiful building. Mowgli is an exciting new operator that will add an extra element to the scheme and is sure to enhance the current line-up.”
The building is set to be completed and the first restaurants opening in July 2015.
