2016 marks 25 years since Chef Patron Michel Roux Jr took the reins of Le Gavroche from his father, Albert Roux OBE. In honour of this, Michel will be hosting a series of celebratory events throughout the year at the restaurant as part of the renowned Roux experience.
Michel has navigated the team and the restaurant through 25 years in the constantly evolving London restaurant scene, ensuring the Le Gavroche menus meet contemporary palates whilst staying true to its roots in classic French cuisine and maintaining the character of the restaurant that is loved by so many. Michel is now looking to the future and the next generation of the Roux family – his daughter, Emily.
Roux Generations
Says Michel Roux Jr: “It’s been an exceptional 25 years for me and for Le Gavroche. I can’t believe how quickly those years have passed, it feels like yesterday I first stepped through the doors as Chef Patron. I’m immensely proud of everything I have achieved but I couldn’t have done it without my fantastic team. They have been instrumental in our success, so it’s really important for me to continue to nurture younger talent in the industry and aid them in achieving the same success – starting with my daughter, Emily. I’m going to continue building on my 25 years at the restaurant but now it seems apt to start looking to the future, and the next generation of Roux.”
Throughout his time at Le Gavroche, Michel has trained some of the UK’s most respected chefs including Marcus Wareing, Gordon Ramsay, Monica Galetti, Bryn Williams, and Jun Tanaka, all of whom have now gone on to secure their own culinary successes.
Michel has maintained the restaurant’s roots in classical French cuisine over the years whilst also steering the restaurant through changing trends in the culinary world. One of his first amendments when he took over the restaurant was to remove the house rule for gentleman to wear ties. 25 years later, Le Gavroche’s style of classic French cooking has evolved to incorporate Michel’s lighter and more modern touch.
These subtle changes have never deterred from the restaurant’s core values, and has seen Le Gavroche win all manner of accolades, from featuring in San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2008 and Michel winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tatler Restaurant Awards in 2012, to the restaurant being named “Top Gastronomic Experience” for the second time in Harden’s London Restaurants Guide just this year.
