Zia Lucia - Launching Mid June

Launching in Islington in mid-June 2016, Zia Lucia brings Londoners a new way to enjoy pizza. By combining a special selection of unique doughs, rare in the London pizza scene, with a flair for real Italian community style, Zia Lucia will create a distinctive experience for pizza lovers across the city.

Zia Lucia’s unique variety of Italian 48-hour slow fermented doughs are inspired by ancient traditions brought from across Italy to London. The recipes will range from the traditional flour dough to an unusual vegetable charcoal black base, from a healthy wholemeal option to special dough made without gluten. The menu at Zia Lucia will continuously evolve to include new experimental doughs, following the creativity of Zia Lucia’s formidable pizzaioli.

Opening on Holloway Road in a burgeoning foodie pocket of Islington, Zia Lucia, which translates as ‘Auntie Lucia’ is run by a team of passionate Italians. Founders, friends and Holloway residents, Claudio Vescovo and Gianluca D’Angelo have created Zia Lucia with the help of family, friends and local figures. Inspired and named after Gianluca’s Auntie Lucia: a warm, generous figure in her family and community in Rome, these important values will be recreated in this neighbourhood pizzeria.

A fantastic cook and generous host, Zia Lucia is both the inspiration behind the brand and has herself invested in the restaurant. Entirely friend-funded, Zia Lucia’s shareholders are personally involved in the success of the restaurant. General Manager Alessio is a well-known figure in the local neighbourhood, having lived and worked on Holloway Road for over 20 years. The result is a restaurant that is made up of a community of friends and locals alike.

The kitchen at Zia Lucia will be headed up by an award-winning pizzaiolo, assisted by a young pizza virtuoso. Both pizzaioli are passionate about the art of pizza and champions of acrobatic pizza. With an open pizza kitchen, customers at Zia Lucia can book overlooking seats and watch the spectacle of these talented chefs at work as well as admire a stylish wood-fired oven, specifically designed and handcrafted in Naples.

Priced from £7-£11, the wood-fired pizzas will feature fresh, classic Italian toppings, all available on the four types of dough. The menu also features white pizzas, with unusual toppings such as pecorino cheese, truffle honey, asparagus, spicy orange sauce and toasted almonds.

Alongside the pizzas, the menu features a selection of Italian style starters, salads and desserts, including an innovative and appetising pizza dessert. The drinks menu will focus on spritzes, negronis, bottled beers from Italy and locally brewed in London, and wine and prosecco sourced from small Italian producers back home.

With a seated capacity of 46 and an outside area seating 10, Zia Lucia will be a warm, personable space that aims to bring a new twist to the market and change the customer experience of enjoying genuine Italian pizza.
