Londoners are in for a gastronomic revelation next month with the launch of JAN on Battersea’s Northcote Road. Opening on September 30th and offering guests a taste of the Caspian, JAN will celebrate flavours that border this Eastern Water, taking influence from the likes of Iran and Turkey. Middle Eastern flavours combined with innovative cocktails all set in a flamboyant surrounding that give a firm nod to its heritage, Jan will be the new go-to restaurant for those wanting something entirely unique.
At the core of Jan’s cooking will be its impressive, medieval-style charcoal oven. This will act as the centre point of the menu producing traditionally cooked bread, meat and vegetable dishes. Signature items from the menu include, perfectly Grilled Lamb Chops and Slow Roast Shoulder in a Pomegranate Glaze served with Chickpeas and Caspian Spices, Sea Bream with Harissa and Preserved Lemons, Charred Miso and Tahini Spiced Cauliflower and a must-try Caspian Spiced Roast Chicken – for two – served in a beautifully scented Cardamom and Rosemary Broth alongside Spiced Aubergine.
Beyond the charcoal dishes, there will also be a selection of smaller plates perfect for sharing. These will include simple dishes with a twist such as home-made Courgette Hummus, Sticky Sumac Chicken Wings, Lamb Kofta Skewers with Pomegranate Molasses and Rare Beef Salad with Charred Leeks, Yoghurt and Garlic Dressing – all destined to be mopped up with JAN’s flatbread, warm from the oven with za’atar spiced oil.
JAN knows the importance of an exciting side dish packed with flavour and will offer just that; Courgette Salad with Fresh Herbs and Saganaki Cheese, Blackened Sweet Potatoes with Crispy Onion Rings and Spiced Yoghurt and Za’atar Fried Potatoes all look set to become firm favourites. Those with a sweet-tooth are advised to leave plenty of room for JAN’s home-made lemon cake served with warm poached nectarines, crème fraiche, pistachios and vanilla salt!
The restaurant itself will incorporate three separate areas with 53 covers in total. For those wanting to enjoy the flavours of the Caspian Al Fresco, a comfortable and heated seating area will be located at the front of the restaurant. Inside, the front area will offer a light and airy space with mirrored ceilings, perfect for day-time dining as well as a relaxed bar area with counter seating, where guests can stop by for a cocktail or two. The drinks menu at JAN will offer refreshing and zingy cocktails incorporating delicate teas, lots of Middle Eastern spices and plenty of fresh fruit like pomegranate and melon. The Satisfied Mule for example combines Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum with Carrot Caramel, Citrus, Ginger Beer, Angostura Bitters, all topped off with a Frozen Yogurt Float or why not try the Order of the Honeycomb – a punchy mix of London Dry Gin, Black Pepper, Bay Leaf Honey Syrup, Yellow Chartreuse, Lemon and Egg White. All syrups, juices and specialist ingredients will be freshly made on site and there will even be a “JAN” beer to try with flavours of ginger and coriander – created especially for the restaurant by “Brew By Numbers” – a craft microbrewery in Bermondsey.
Jan’s music is as unique as its Caspian Flavours. From morning till close your gastronomic adventures will be complemented by a playlist built in-house, offering you a taste of old and new school classics. The back of the restaurant will have more of a decadent, evening feel to it with wooden timber flooring, feature tiling, and paintings in heavy gold framing. There will also be long tables perfect for feasting and sharing food with friends! An open kitchen will showcase JAN’s stunning charcoal oven and grill so diners can enjoy the theatre of watching their dishes being crafted.
Faizan Iqbal, JAN’s Founder comments:
